From Idea to Global Manufacturing Platform in Five Months
How B9Creations partnered with Kulzer to engineer an integrated dental additive manufacturing solution spanning hardware, software, materials, workflow, and deployment.
The Challenge
Kulzer had deep expertise in dental materials, workflows, and applications. What it needed was an additive manufacturing platform capable of turning that expertise into a seamless digital production solution for dental professionals.
And an off-the-shelf 3D printer wasn't enough.
The solution needed to meet demanding accuracy requirements, integrate into dental workflows, support application-specific materials, simplify operation for users with varying levels of additive manufacturing experience, and meet medical-equipment requirements—all while providing a platform capable of global deployment.
B9Creations partnered with Kulzer to engineer the technology around those requirements rather than forcing the application onto an existing platform. The result became the cara Print 4.0, launched in 2017 as a dental 3D printing solution powered by B9Creations technology.
The Solution
One Integrated System, Engineered Around the Application
B9Creations worked across hardware, software, materials, and application engineering to transform Kulzer's dental expertise into a turnkey additive manufacturing platform.
CUSTOM HARDWARE
The printing platform was engineered to deliver the precision and repeatability required for demanding dental applications.
The system targeted <25 μm effective resolution and ±54 μm tolerance across the entire build area, while eliminating routine user calibration. B9Creations' FAST technology was validated across more than 200 systems to demonstrate fleetwide precision.
DENTAL-SPECIFIC SOFTWARE
The challenge wasn't simply making the printer easier to operate. It was embedding dental knowledge into the workflow.
B9Creations developed a custom Expert System incorporating input and expertise from senior dental technicians into automated print preparation and workflows for applications including dentures, models, and surgical guides.
The result: a software workflow reduced to three clicks, helping reduce operator training to one day.
MATERIALS + PROCESS DEVELOPMENT
Kulzer brought extensive dental-material expertise to the partnership, while B9Creations' platform and process capabilities enabled materials and print parameters to be optimized as part of the complete solution.
The resulting cara workflow supported Kulzer's portfolio of dental materials across applications including splints and night guards, individualized impression trays, surgical guides, dental models, and cast structures.
Kulzer's own product documentation emphasized that finely tuned material parameters were central to achieving the fit, accuracy, and surface quality required for dental restorations.
WORKFLOW ENGINEERING
The goal wasn't to deliver a standalone printer. It was to fit additive manufacturing into the customer's broader digital dental workflow.
The cara ecosystem ultimately connected digital design with printing, cleaning, curing, and application-specific materials, creating a more complete digital manufacturing process for dental professionals.
The Result
From Concept to a Global Fleet
B9Creations and Kulzer moved from idea to reality in five months.
The resulting platform combined customized hardware, application-specific software, materials and process expertise into a private-label solution designed for dental professionals.
5 MONTHS
from idea to market-ready solution
1,000+
private-label turnkey systems deployed
3 CLICKS
through the customized software workflow
1 DAY
of operator training
0
routine calibrations
~1 HOUR
to produce many dental restorations
Those aren't isolated product specifications. Together, they demonstrate what happens when hardware, software, materials, and application expertise are engineered as one system rather than assembled as separate technologies.
Built to Perform Beyond the First Installation
The cara Print platform went on to be used globally across dental offices, laboratories, educational settings, and specialized clinical environments. B9Creations has thousands of white-labeled, regulatory-compliant dental systems deployed through its longstanding dental partnership.
The partnership also extended beyond equipment. B9Creations and Kulzer worked together on digital dental applications, including a 3D-printed denture clinic in the Texas correctional system—one of only four such clinics in the United States at the time.
What This Demonstrates
Custom Doesn't Have to Mean One-Off.
The Kulzer partnership demonstrates the model behind B9[X]: Start with the application and business requirements, then engineer the technology around them.
Hardware. Customized around performance and regulatory requirements.
Software. Built around the user's actual workflow and domain expertise.
Materials. Parameters and processes optimized around application requirements.
Application Engineering. Dental knowledge translated into a repeatable manufacturing workflow.
Deployment. Designed not just to work once, but to be deployed at scale.
The result wasn't simply a customized 3D printer.
It was a complete additive manufacturing platform built around Kulzer's business, expertise, and customers.
